2 Virgin Flights this week: SYD-MEL-SYD. They appear to be trying to compete with QF, however they don't even come close, especially with regard to their inflight snack or meals or refreshments (or whatever you call them). The flight from SYD-MEL (mid-afternoon) consisted of two buttery sweet biscuits, (almost thrown at you by the CAs) and instant coffee and MEL-SYD (late afternoon) was basically the same, although this time I opted for the juice (orange juice only and not cold). Its almost insulting to be given this type of refreshment. In the last two months, I have taken domestic flights in Argentina, Germany and Thailand and nothing comes close to the utterly miserable snack or refreshments that Virgin Australia seem prepared to dish-up. On a positive note, the flights ran more-or-less to time however disembarkation via the rear door was not available on both occasions, which is generally the only positive area of comparison with QF - the time taken to get on the aircraft and to get off. If I had a choice in the matter and not subject to corporate travel policies, I would fly QF almost exclusively.

Had asked for Wheelchair assistance in February when the flight was booked. Upon landing, we waited for everyone else to disembark as usual. I was asked to place the wheelchair person onto the wheelchair. Even if I wanted to help, there were too many VA staff in the way. Once the chair movement was completed, the swap at the door to another wheelchair was required. Because the flight was well over an hour late, pre-arranged transport could not be there so we had to make our own way home (i.e - by taxi). Once in the luggage claim area, our assistance disappeared after telling me that i could manage the wheelchair. I could manage the wheelchair, but what about the luggage we also had. Fortunately the airport staff assisted me after I had tried to manoeuvre both the trolley and the luggage cart. Very poor way to treat any customer.

Flown Virgin Australia several times from Brisbane to Sydney, Brisbane to Melbourne Tullamarine and Brisbane to Melbourne Avalon and return on all of those. The most comfortable domestic flights in Australia in my opinion, with personal TV's and meals and beverages served at a cost. The seats are just like other seats on Qantas, Jetstar etc. The cabin crew are just like any other domestic cabin crew, only speaking English and do not go out of their way to help. Still my favourite domestic airline, however they are far more expensive than any other domestic airline.

Boarding occurred on schedule but once everyone was on we were all advised that a 55 minute delay to pushback would occur due to storms in Sydney. Now you would think that crew could then prepare themselves for the cabin service experience which on this flight included complimentary wine and beers. The first trolley did not appear into the cabin until 19minutes after the seat belt signs were turned off. Starting at the front and ever so SLOWLY working its way back, we were on decent and still 10 whole rows left to service. Needless to say no beer or wine today for me. Quite frankly sometime I find that Virgin domestic crews could to with a rocket strategically placed you know where. EDITORS COMMENT: Everything has to be locked down and ovens off for take off. There is no preparation the crew can do before takeoff for any in-flight service. That would be a serious breach of safety.

Amazing service on Virgin Australia. Flight attendants and staff were friendly. Only had a small issue and that was a 30-minute delay in Brisbane before we got underway. Staff were extremely helpful and kept updating us when we could board. Unfortunately due to Covid Virgin now don't serve an in-flight snack to economy class so I paid for food which was a little expensive. The in-flight entertainment was quite poor. I had trouble connecting to the free wifi and I couldn't use the VA app. Other than that a really enjoyable flight and I would definitely recommend Virgin Australia to everyone. 8/10.

ADL-MEL-ADL B738 Economy The service was fine, its an hour in the air. My only gripe is.... dont call a museli bar the size of a 50c coin a snack, and dont be annoyed that I asked for an additional milk. The coffee is crap, so something has to mask the taste. On short haul like ADL-MEL they are not a full service carrier.

I took advantage of a sale to fly from Perth to Brisbane and return to visit family. Flights were very competively priced. Both flights departed and arrived on time and were uneventful. Staff, both on the ground and in the cabin were extremely polite and helpful and I couldn't fault them at all. I was disappointed that the onboard entertainment system was not working on the return flight though. Seats on both flights were comfortable and the leg room was sufficient for a short person. Catering on the outward flight was disappointing with an inedible breakfast of plastic scrambled egg and insipid tasteless sausage being served. On the return flight there was only a vegetarian option of risotto available, but once I explained that I couldn't eat rice for health reasons, an alternative meal of chicken was produced which was tasty. Refreshments were offered continually throughout the flight. Overall the flight experience was good and I will travel again with Virgin Australia.

I just travelled to Melbourne from Auckland with VA165. As a crew member myself, my values urge me to treat passengers fairly and equally. I don't expect special treatment like frequent travellers get.. Neither do i want to complain about the quality of food and in flight entertainment. I always exhibit courtesy and good mannerism everytime i travel, because i know what it is like to be a cabin crew. The least I expect is fair treatment, eye contact and a Thank You when we disembark! (..Sounds trivial, I know!). But, for someone like me with more than a decade of experience in hospitality and customer service experience, that must be something that we should offer genuinely to customers. Personally, to me, that means lot than a glass of champagne with caviar or an upgrade to JC. When I boarded, I wished Good Morning to this crew (Not going to mention names here)! There was no eye contact and no wishing back. She was more indulged in directing passengers to their seats. When i disembarked, same crew stood by the door. I looked at her to say thank you, she looked at me and then looked away. That's sheer ignorance. Definitely not something i would do as a flight attendant!

I am an aviation lover and a passionate traveller, and I wire this to anyone who is indecisive about which Airline to chose when they are traveling. I recently flew on Virgin Australia from Sydney to Perth. I have taken this specific route previously, and found my experience to be pleasing over all. Due to timing restraints, I was forced to take the 2:00pm flight, which unfortunately has a reputation for being one of Virgin’s inferior services. In short, I would have to agree. It presents one of the longest domestic flights offered in Australia (5 hours) in one of the smallest planes. I Arrived at Sydney Airport buzzed to embark upon my adventure. As I was only going to be in Perth for a few days I did not need to check-in a bag (this is a life saver, I would recommend if you don’t have much luggage). I printed my boarding pass with ease, and walked swiftly through to security. On the other side, I aimed straight for gate 38. The Virgin terminal in Sydney is an incredibly long walk, (of course the Perth gate is at the very end!) Prior to boarding the staff of my flight made a quick announcement to let customers know to download the “Virgin Australia In Flight Entertainment App”. Which basically meant my plane had no TVs on it… Boarding is usually very organised and efficient, however this was not the case on this flight. The staff were disorganised and the process was rather chaotic. They called the usual business class and priority passengers first. Those not of this status were forced to queue up, resulting in further disorder. However, I found that general boarding line was empty and when they opened the “general boarding” gate I got to walk straight through. The cabin layout for the 737-800 is a three-by-three configuration. I had the window seat and was right next to the wing of the plane. The legroom was spacious (although I am not particularly large). Unfortunately, the inkling I had about there not being TVs proved to be true. However, thanks to the staff who gave me plenty of warning I was prepared and had downloaded the entertainment app. Unfortunately, the movie, TV and entertainment choice was extremely limited (disappointing). They had an overwhelming number of romantic comedies: Bridesmaids, The Other Woman, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Pretty Woman (just to name a few). Despite this array of ‘chick-flicks’, the only movie that helped consume my time was Keanu Reeve’s latest hit, John Wick (highly recommend!) The take-off was very smooth and we climbed to the cruising altitude quite speedily with very little turbulence which is always commendable. The seatbelt sign flicked off and the announcement that we all had been waiting for had arrived, “the meal service for you today is the choice of Pesto pasta with chicken or vegetarian noodles”. This was definitely not the most exciting choices I have ever had presented to me. Around 15 minutes later the trolley came to my row. I ended up choosing the pasta (was feeling a bit like pasta in the moment – how naive). There were some nice touches. The pasta came with a mini sticky-date pudding. The food was presented in a maccas-style ‘Happy Meal’ box as opposed to the moist residue aluminium foil wrapping that we are so accustomed to. And as a final touch, the packaging was stamped with a little smiley black and red smiley-face on it. When I opened it, my excitement immediately dwindled. The pasta (if you could call it that) looked like it had been mistaken for a dog’s dinner! The chicken was bone dry and covered in a wet red paste which I assumed to be penne sauce. I am no Italian food connoisseur, but from my limited knowledge penne and pesto are not one-in-the-same. I was utterly shocked that a premium airline like this could serve a meal of such low quality. Another thing that confused me was they brought out the food first and about 10-15 minutes later they brought out the drinks. I was quite thirsty after my meal and I had to wait which was both frustrating and dehydrating. In conclusion, I would recommend stocking up on snacks before boarding.
About an hour into the flight the smooth sailing that I was enjoying gave in and the turbulence hit the plane. We rocked violently for about 20 minutes. The rest of the flight remained bumpy. This was probably due to the aircrafts size which would not be able to cope with the high winds that were at the altitude. I must say the staff were very friendly and very kind. They were also efficient around the cabin and tended to everyone’s needs. After the long 5 hours we finally began our descent into Perth. The landing was smooth. I looked out my window and saw the wing, which looked to be in an alarming state. It was fully contracted back which was normal for a landing but there seemed to be a lot of rust in the wing (photo doesn’t do it justice). I must say the new Virgin Australia terminal in Perth airport is absolutely stunning. Once I landed I just walked straight through the terminal, not needing to wait for my luggage and hopped straight in a taxi.
I would rate virgin Australia’s Sydney to Perth service on the 737 about a 4.5/10. On the one hand, the plane was small and old, the entertainment was not the best, the food was absolutely horrific and the turbulence frightening. However, on the other hand I can say that the service from the cabin crew was fantastic and I think if I were on the a330 things would be quite different. I will continue to support Virgin Australia as an airline, but would recommend avoiding the smaller flights, and aim for the prime-time slot on the bigger planes. This will make for a more enjoyable experience than the one I have commented on. By Josh Paul

I flew Perth to Sydney on an Airbus 330 800 with BYO entertainment. I flew on the illfated VA564 which (arrived late from Adelaide due to the weather, left late and lasted 2 hours and returned to Perth. As usual a schimozzle at the airport when we were finally handed a piece of paper with the number to call (supposedly in OZ) early the next day. Those from o/s. interstate and from the country were given accommodation. The number of course was in the Philippines and the call centre lady knew nothing of the rejigged flight and had to ask colleagues. Despite what was said on Tuesday night (that the flight would leave before midday) the flight was scheduled for 1.00pm The next day was on VA 9506. The gate for the new flight was cramped and the flight left late. Only 1 person in business class (who had 2 toilets for his disposal whilst the rest of the plane shared 2 at the back) and so the steward then gave the first 8 rows good service in a cheerful manner. Virgin still do not cater for people who are medically diagnosed with coeliac disease despite the promise 3 years ago that they were going to change. So their complimentary meal service is non existent for me. I had downloaded the Virgin app and it opened successfully but when I clicked on the movie I wanted to watch it died and stayed dead for an hour. I then opened it and could only watch the map. Riveting in flight entertainment from Perth to Sydney. We returned on QANTAS and had a great flight. Efficient check-in, helpful staff; gluten free meal, movies and the plane left and arrived on time.

I flew Perth to Adelaide with my wife on 15June16 on Flight VA722 and returned Adelaide on 18Jun16 Flight VA715. We live in Bunbury south of Perth which is a two and half hour drive each way. Departure time forward was 1720 hrs and return 1100. The pitiful meal we got on each of the flights was pathetic. A small roll and chocolate was all we got. When we arrived in Adelaide at 9 40 pm we were extremely hungry. At least a decent size sandwich would have helped.

Recently flew Virgin from Kununurra to Sydney via Perth. Check in staff were great. Bag was transferred to Sydney so I did not need to collect it and check in again in Perth. I fly often and have never had any complaints about Virgin. The Cabin crew were very friendly and helpful. I really enjoy flying with Virgin and would recommend them highly.

I flew Sydney to Los Angeles on Virgin's "old" 777 in Business class. The value was incredible as we booked in January when they usually have their sale. Sadly the seats hadn't been updated yet so we were stuck with the 2-3-2 layout. The good thing was that we managed to score Row 5 which has curtains around the seat to give you your own little compartment. The seat was narrow but their was a lot of legroom. The service as always was FANTASTIC and the same went for the food. Would fly them again in a heartbeat, especially with their new 1-2-1 direct aisle access seat! EDITORS COMMENT: Great feedback - thanks for sharing it with us.

After good experiences I decided to do Perth by bidding for an upgrade and sleeping on the return. Unfortunately, both planes (there and back) were 737's. Really suffered coming from airport to work after expecting to sleep on the A330 coast to coast service. VA were good on the delay notification and aircraft change explanation. Had I known earlier though, I wouldn't have bothered spending $1000 for the upgrades. Sleep was my motivator, not so the meal or lounge access.

I flew from Perth to Phuket return this month on the 737-800 and can't fault the service. The seat was comfortable, food great and beers cold. The only real issue was that we had to walk across the tarmac at Perth on departure & arrival. We also didn't get a gate at Phuket & had to use the bus so I guess we were lucky it wasn't raining. I have booked again with them for January.``

I guess you get what you pay for with budget airlines. we just did Vila to Brisbane. Flight was an hour late with no explanation and we had just waited three hours in the stuffy airport at Vila after our water bottles were taken and every bottle of water the air side had for sale was gone. After take off it took an hour and a half for the flight attendants to get to us to offer a drink and all the food of course was gone. Got to Brisbane starving. On top of that there is no in flight entertainment and the seats sagged.

5 hour flight from Brisbane to Perth was fully booked, seat was tiny and space was tiny, there was absolutely no room. Conplemntary Food was soggy, and there was no entertainment, you would think on a five hour flight there would be. EDITORS COMMENT: There is entertainment but you have to bring your own device to watch it.

Booked a flight from Sydney to Canberra leaving at 14:25 on 24 February and built travel plans around that flight, including booking a different flight to get to Sydney and also attending a function at 18:00 in Canberra a couple of hours after arrival. On the morning of the flight I received a text saying the flight had been cancelled - no explanation. The only alternative was a flight leaving at 17.05 which would mean a 4 hour wait sitting in the Sydney terminal and I would also miss the beginning of the function I was to attend. Then, frustratingly, the 17.05 flight was delayed another 20 minutes, further delaying my attendance at the function in Canberra. Virgin claims to be a full service alternative to Qantas but there you hear of too are too many instances of these mishaps occurring and it is really not much better than a low cost carrier - certainly no real competition to Qantas.

Full flight service. What a load of rubbish. if you have any sort of food intolerance you either get nothing OR after you have mentioned your issue and complained and everyone has had their meal you MAY get a Cranberry and White Chocolate Biscuit with a triple Chocolate fudge biscuit if you are gluten free. This is regarded as a full complimentary meal. At least on this Melb to Perth flight i was offered something unlike the Perth to Melbourne flight of indifference. Movies cannot be stopped and service is very poor. Choose QANTAS instead. The cabin staff tell you to complain to customer service and after waiting 3 weeks when you receive a reply it is just a standard gobble de gook letter. Virgin does not offer quality service.

Well done Virgin Australia you are truly the best airline out there. My flight was amazing and couldn't ask for a better flight! The staff in particular ensured safety was their number one priority and ensured we had the most enjoyable flight possible. The seats were perfectly comfortable and the food was in particular tasty and delicious. The inflight entertainment never left us a second bored and I would 100% recommend this airline. Your not truly flying until you fly with Virgin Australia

Staff are told to remind passengers that face masks must remain on during the flight duration exception for eating and drinking… Staff don’t seem to care about the safety of passengers during the duration of the flight seeing as how they never ask passengers to wear their mask. If I’m ever seated next to someone not wearing a mask I’ll make a complaint (it’s gonna happen eventually) I get it’s a budget airline, but it’s not a budget health risk.

From the minute we walked into ZQN airport to the minute we left SYD airport everything Virgin provided us with was flawless. We were traveling from ZQN to SYD so it was only a 3hr journey but just for the sake of luxury I decided to book a business class fare for my husband, my two kids and I. When we walked into ZQN airport, Virgin ground staff immediately assisted us with our baggage and took it right up to priority check-in. Check-in was easy and we were escorted straight to the Air NZ Koru Lounge. The lounge wasn't spectacular but it had a good selection of food, drinks and places to sit etc. There was a boarding call made by the lounge staff and we walked right to the gate and into the plane where we were greeted with a luxurious leather seat, an amenity kit, a pillow and blanket and a Samsung tablet with some headphones. The seat reclined to 7 inches, so whilst it wasn't a flat bed, it was great for a 3hr flight! With a drink in hand, we stretched out our legs and began watching movies. About 45 mins into the flight, we were given a menu of food. I chose the duck leg, with tomato relish and patato puree. What can I say other than IT WAS DELICIOUS.......BEST PLANE FOOD! Overa

I wish to inform that my disastrous business trip started 6.00 am on 19/07/16 with a very long queue at the check-in counter in Brisbane. Staff member advised they were short staffed as the reason for the delayed i check-in of the luggage. I proceeded to my gate and waited for a period of 3 hours, received an sms that my flight was cancelled and was bumped to an afternoon flight 2.00pm. I had a business meeting in Sydney at 12.00pm that day. Rescheduled meeting for next day at the same time, got my travel agent to book the same 8am flight but at 2.16am got an sms that I was bumped again to a flight to Canberra and then to Sydney but would not make my meeting again. After phoning Flight Centre, I was put on a direct flight to Sydney, to be on time. Today 24/07/16 my flight VA925 yet again cancelled, no sms, no email, bumped to 11.00am flight VA935 without my knowledge. I am very upset for the lack of communication, Virgin ground staff not courteous or polite with customers plus the inconvenience caused. This is really not good enough for an airline.

OH NO we won a Virgin Upgrade!! What a pain!!! 1. The offer to "bid" came in an email from Virgin 2. Bidding involved using a page with a lot of smaller print and a prominent sliding scale. The lowest bid shown was the same amount as our original flight price. It appeared that the bid entered is the modified price to then pay for the flight. If you are sight impaired, or do not have good English language skills, or have poor literary skills - Beware this is not as simple as the sliding mechanism would appear. 3. Enter a bid - there is no summary shown to indicate your final total cost. Hit "submit." 4. We got a confirmation email - at 9.09pm on the same night that our "Congratulations you have won email arrived at 2.20am. We do not have smart phones. We are not continually tuned in to our emails. We had no way to cancel our erroneous bid! 5. But there's more! With no further communication from Virgin we received another "congratulations.." email for our return journey another $200 each!! We rang them, we filled in forms, we tried to reason with them - all to no avail. 6. Their sliding scale cost us $800 and the upgrade was poor value!

Virgin planes can be extremely cramped in space. Me being quite tall I find it very uncomfortable for my legs and its pathetic how we have to pay extra for extra leg room seats, I mean seriously we already pay enough for the flight itself. All in all, crew were polite, food was decent and it was a decent plane trip.

Virgin Australia is a wonderful airline with comfortable seats, reasonable food, good IFE and excellent service. They are always on-time and fast with delivering baggage to the baggage carousel. Never had problems with check in or delays. I would recommend this airline to everyone especially travelling on the Airbus A330-200

My return flight from Perth to Broome was free with my ANZ Adventures credit card. I did a pre-flight bid for an upgrade to Business and was successful. As it was morning, no alcoholic drinks were available in the lounge. I had a flat white and some cheese and biscuits and sat down in a comfy chair. The plane seats were roomy and the service was excellent. I had a sparkling wine before take-off and I had 2 more and a glass of red. I had a ‘toasted’ chicken sandwich for lunch. It was not toasted. It was microwaved. But it sure beats sitting in economy. I used the Virgin entertainment system on my ipad which I had no problem connecting to or using.

After a long flight from Santiago to Sydney via Auckland, we missed our bus connection in Brisbane by about an hour because our flight had been cancelled & we were put onto a later flight. This neccessitated an overnight stay in a Brisbane hotel & the airline refuses to reimburse us. They use the excuse that our flight was ONLY delayed by a short time. Unfortunately there is no effective regulation of airlines who care NOTHING about travellers being inconvenienced & being out of pocket.

Perth-Sydney A330 for work Early morning 5am departure, was meant to be a 737 but was pleasantly surprised to see a A330 at the gate. Flight was barely 40% full so plenty of room to spread out. After take off moved to a middle set of 4 empty seat to lat down and grab some sleep. Didn't eat the food as i slept. Plane was quiet and cabin crew were friendly. Had slight delay into Melbourne due to a runway closure but pilot kept us informed and only landed 10min late ( we were 15min ahead coming in) Flew Qantas on return leg and would rate virgin higher based on this trip

I travelled from Perth to Gold Coast and back on Virgin. I found the staff were amazing! My flight from Gold Coast to Melbourne on the way back was delayed, I informed a cabin crew member that I may miss my connecting flight. She organised for them to hold the plane, she kept informing me of what was going on and when the flight landed she allowed me to get off before everyone else. When I left the plane there was a Melbourne crew member who ran with me to the Perth plane! It just made my day, they were so good.

Regular flier with Virgin. The 'friendly' staff seems to have slipped in last year or two. Generally pretty good but in flight entertainment is poor (ie access). Live TV sometimes doesn't work although being taken out. In front rows there is no screen and no alternatives. Taking an age to sort this out.

Another flight with Virgin, no complaints they seem to get better as they go,, even better now that they code share with Singapore Airlines, so I cant travel from Townsville to Ho Chi Minh City with the same ticket,, great so when I check in at Townsville don't have to worry about bags, or transfers from Domestic to International,, great service all the way

I'm waiting for my plane and I'm watching the virgin crew help a man with a suit he has left in his Iberia car. The virgin staff have gone above and beyond tracking down the driver with their phones and computers and got the driver back and organised for the suitcase to come off the plane and got the suit to the pax to put in case. Well done VIRGIN

I feel a bit "meh" about Virgin Australia, especially after flying Air New Zealand. I flew in an aisle seat in row 48, toward the back of the plane. Leg room was pretty wretched, with my knees barely clear of the seat in front of me (I'm only 5'9"). Every time the person in front of me sat down in his seat, it banged into my knees. The seat headrests were fairly comfortable, and I didn't get an overly-uncomfortable butt during the almost 14-hour flight. Service was friendly enough, and they were great about not banging into people. Overall, the flight just felt crowded and close. Nothing too terrible, but nothing remarkable either.

Flew Virgin Perth to Hobart and back. I chose it over cheaper providers because the ticket price included luggage, food, and standard leg room. God knows what less leg room would be like as it was still pretty cramped! Food was simple but tasty and so much better than raking about to pay as you go. Self check in at Perth was great. Fantastic range of in flight entertainment on the long section. All up - can't complain!

Booked and paid for return tickets Darwin to Akld. Paid for 'the works' upgrade because it was going to be a long night with stop over in Melbourne so wanted to be comfortable and have a meal on plane without having to eat the junk food as dinner. Boarded and it was announced complimentary refreshments including food and beverages would commence. Were given snack foods and the usual drinks. Everyone was given these. Little while went by and I asked if a meal would be served as I paid for 'the works'. No! was the answer and an attitude of 'as if'. The snack was the meal which everyone got. So everyone must have upgraded to 'the works' on this flight. I have 3 more virgin flights these holidays and i am not looking to any of them. Wish I had booked with another airline and paid economy prices. Also the trip was over 4 hours. I downloaded the inflight app to have some entertainment. Wasnt on this plane!? Why not? Big disappointment indeed :-(
