The rise of STARLUX Airlines

Airline Ratings

By Airline Ratings Fri Jun 26, 2026

STARLUX Airlines commenced operations just before the global COVID-19 pandemic, but it managed to survive. Now, the airline operates as a boutique luxury airline, offering routes across Asia and North America with Europe and Australia on the immediate horizon.

But just how did a small Taiwanese carrier become one of the world’s most luxurious and well-regarded airlines?

Chang Kuo-wei is the son of Chang Yung-fa, the founder of Taiwan's Evergreen Group and EVA Airways, so aviation runs deep in the family. When his father died in 2016, a corporate reshuffle finally gave Chang Kuo-wei the freedom to chase an ambition of his own, and two years later he launched STARLUX Airlines.

The timing could hardly have been worse. Within weeks of the carrier's inaugural service to Macau, the World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 a global pandemic and air travel ground to a halt almost overnight. STARLUX survived where many start-ups would have folded. Rather than retreat, it kept accepting deliveries of A321neos through 2020 and 2021 and put them to work on cargo-focused services while passenger demand had all but vanished. That bold, counterintuitive move left the airline primed to expand the moment borders reopened.

Going long haul

STARLUX took delivery of its first Airbus A330-900neo in late 2022 and its first A350-900 in the same year, and Chairman Chang thought the occasion important enough to fly the A350 home from Toulouse personally. Those widebodies unlocked the long-haul transpacific ambitions that would put STARLUX head to head with EVA Airways and China Airlines.

The North American push began in April 2024 with the launch of Los Angeles. San Francisco followed in August 2024, Seattle arrived later that year and Ontario, California joined the map in summer 2025. To stretch its reach well beyond those gateways, the airline has since signed codeshare partnerships with Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, opening up onward travel right across the United States.

STARLUX: luxury through and through

Chang has always believed that luxury travel should never be reserved for the few, but offered to everybody who steps on board. At STARLUX, luxury does not hinge on the fare you paid or the cabin you booked. It is a standard attitude woven through the brand and felt in every cabin

STARLUX Airlines’ business class suites rival those of well-established Middle Eastern airlines. As well as generous space, each seat features a NASA inspired Zero-G recline mode and the first A350 fitted with Airbus’s ‘New Production Standard’, including.

  • A 24-inch 4K touchscreen

  • 44 inches of pitch, 21 inch of width and a 6ft 7in lie-flat bed

  • Wireless charging

  • Gentex dimmable windows.

  • Bluetooth headphone connectivity

  • Privacy doors

The A350s go a step further with four first-class seats, each boasting 83 inches of pitch, 23 inches of width, a 32-inch 4K touchscreen and a fully lie-flat bed behind privacy doors that seal off a completely enclosed suite.

Passengers will experience top-class dining through the airline’s STAR Gourmet menu, teaming up with Michelin chefs such as Lam Ming Kin. Other catering highlights include Bollinger champagne, premium Taiwanese yoghurt, Kalon Tea and pre-order options.

STARLUX Premium Economy

STARLUX's premium economy stretches two inches beyond the 38-inch industry average and stands comfortably alongside well-established names like Cathay Pacific and Qantas. It is built on the Recaro PL3530, the very seat Emirates chose for its refurbished A380 premium economy cabin and incudes;

  • 40 inches of seat pitch, 18.7 inch of width and 8 inch of recline

  • A 15.6-inch HD touchscreen

  • Bluetooth headphone connectivity

  • Adjustable foot and legrest

  • Six-way adjustable headrest

Economy has not been forgotten

At its World's Best Airline Awards in 2026, AirlineRatings.com named STARLUX the fifth best airline in the world, and its economy cabin is a big part of why. These are elevated economy seats, fitted with touches many rivals still leave out including

  • 31 inches of seat pitch, 18 inches of width and 5 inch of recline

  • A 13.3-inch HD touchscreen

  • Bluetooth headphone connectivity

  • USB-A and USB-C charging ports

The future is bright: European expansion, entry to Australia and new aircraft

In August 2026 the airline will launch its first flights to Europe, Prague specifically, with Sydney, Australia to follow in 2027. The Sydney flight will then go on to Auckland, New Zealand, enabling another new city pair for STARLUX.

The airline took delivery of its first A350-1000 in January 2026, with 17 more on the way. Two of them wear special liveries from Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama and, branded AIRSORAYAMA, will fly in liquid silver and gold respectively, a striking statement of the airline's commitment to design-led innovation.

STARLUX Airlines is a Seven Star PLUS airline

As part of its internationally recognised safety rating system, AirlineRatings.com rates STARLUX Airlines as a Seven Star PLUS airline. It is the highest accolade the system offers, earned after the carrier returned an almost perfect onboard cabin safety audit in December 2025.

In January 2026, AirlineRatings.com went on to name STARLUX one of the world's top 25 safest airlines. CEO Sharon Petersen said: "While we generally would not include a relatively young airline such as STARLUX, their approach to safety and transparency is exceptional, and the fact other leading airlines talk about them really says it all."

All eyes on STARLUX Airlines

As the aviation industry battles surging fuel prices, STARLUX Airlines continues to offer luxury travel at affordable prices. With its bespoke BMW Designworks business class suites and above industry-standard premium economy seats, STARLUX Airlines defines the new era of luxury air travel.
