You want me to do what?

As political chaos spread across Egypt and a Qantas jet chartered by the government prepared to airlift hundreds of Australians out of Cairo, one couple on board had a burning question: could they claim frequent flyer points on the free evacuation flight? The bold remark by the couple being flown to safety is one of a growing number of bizarre and outrageous requests Australians overseas are making to consular officials according to Australia’s Courier Mail. In a fascinating article which borders on the ridiculous the Courier Mail has found that some have asked if Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade can feed their dogs while they're away, while others have wanted to know if "the sand in Egypt" would upset their asthma. "I haven't heard from my friend for three years. I'm worried about him and I also want his motorcycle out of my garage," another person inquired of DFAT. In the year to June, DFAT responded to 11,927 cases of Australians in difficulty overseas. Bangkok, Bali, Laos and Vietnam are the destinations of most Australias seeking help. See the top ten bizarre claims and fill story here: Courier Mail And while most cases are resolved quickly, DFAT is urging Australian travellers to be aware of the limitation on consulates, whose time is increasingly being taken up by outrageous requests. "Travellers need to be aware of the limits of DFAT's consular assistance," a spokesman for the department told the Courier Mail.
