Etihad unveils its A330neos with Beyond Borders interiors

At the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai on 14 September, Etihad Airways launched its Beyond Borders product and experience, which will debut on its new A330-900 aircraft. The A330neo's interior is the first in the airline’s fleet designed around Beyond Borders, elevating an already unforgettable onboard experience. The A330neo will feature a three-class layout, including First Suites, for Etihad’s regional and medium-haul network.

Etihad is introducing a new design language across its aircraft cabins and lounges, all backed by a US$20 billion investment in new aircraft and customer experience. US$1 billion of this has been set aside for a fleet retrofit programme, creating a consistent product across all of its aircraft. Chief executive Antonoaldo Neves said Beyond Borders goes beyond the aircraft and the seat, covering the whole journey from lounges and food to wellbeing, connectivity and service. Etihad says it will reveal more of the programme over the coming months.

The A321LR is shaping the airline’s future

Beyond Borders has its roots in the A321LR, which, when introduced, had First Suites and fully lie-flat business class seats on a single-aisle aircraft. Antonoaldo Neves said, “We brought First and fully lie-flat Business to a single-aisle aircraft, and guests have responded strongly to the experience it offers, actively choosing to fly on the aircraft.”

Etihad is using the success of the A321LR as a template for the rest of its fleet, starting with the A330neo. The aircraft will feature First class up front, as well as business class and economy for the same regional and medium-haul flights operated by the A321LR. The new Beyond Borders concept is also coming to the A321LR, creating greater consistency across its widebody and narrowbody fleet.

AirlineRatings flew on Etihad’s A321LR between Abu Dhabi and Zurich in economy last year, and we saw the appeal. The cabin felt fresh and well finished, including responsive 4K touchscreens equipped with Bluetooth headphone connectivity. Small touches such as a branded amenity kit and one of the best economy pillows made the flight feel much closer to a widebody experience than we expected.

From Sand to Superstructure

Etihad has big plans, and the new designs take cues from Abu Dhabi through a concept called ‘from sand to superstructure’, drawing on the emirate’s landscape, architecture and transformation. The new cabins will combine bright, calm spaces with final touches, including sconce lighting inspired by Etihad’s facet pattern. Premium cabins will get perforated genuine leather seats, and first-class seat numbers will be projected discreetly onto the floor. The new design does not stop at the cabin door, and Etihad plans to carry these touches into its lounges, creating a seamless transition.

The A330neo will serve high-demand premium routes

With the first of 15 aircraft expected in September 2027, each aircraft will carry four first suites, 24 business and 252 economy seats. The aircraft type is not new for Etihad, with the airline retiring its final A330 in 2020. The new A330neo will signify a fleet renewal programme, complemented by the new Beyond Borders concept.

Etihad plans to deploy the A330neo on regional and medium-haul routes across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Markets with high demand for premium travel will be targeted, allowing for flexibility and extra capacity as demand continues to grow. The network will overlap with the A321LR, which already serves Copenhagen, Zurich, Bangkok and Phuket, to name a few. On the busiest of these routes, the A330neo enables Etihad to add seat capacity while keeping first-class on offer.

What the A330neo will look like onboard

While official seat pitches are yet to be released by Etihad, four First Suites will each have a closing door, a space for a companion to dine or socialise, and a 32-inch screen. Wireless charging, a dedicated storage and powder station with premium amenities will be available. Just behind the suites, 24 business class seats will all have direct aisle access, fully lie-flat beds, and sliding doors, which is a clear step-up from the doorless Business Studio on the A380. Each seat has a 17.3-inch screen, wireless charging pads, a large table, and personal storage. Economy will have 252 seats, including 32 extra legroom seats with four extra inches of pitch. Every seat will feature Etihad’s fixed-wing headrest embossed with the airline’s logo, personal charging, and the same 13.3-inch 4K screen enjoyed by passengers on the A321LR.

Beyond Borders is only just getting started

The new A330neo enables Etihad to have a medium-haul widebody aircraft that will match its A321LR. With more First Suites planned across the fleet and a new design language also going into its lounges, Beyond Borders will be Etihad’s biggest product transformation in its history.
