Air Niugini 737 undershoots runway and ends up in the ocean

An Air Niugini Boeing 737 has crashed into the ocean short of the runway in Micronesia and sunk.

The 737 was approaching runway 04 in heavy rain when it hit the water short of the runway.

Police have confirmed that all 36 passengers and crew are safe.

PNG’s Accident Investigation Commission is preparing a team to travel to the crash site just off the island of Weno.

US Navy Sailors Come to the Aid of Plane in Lagoon

TO THE RESCUE: A team of U.S. Navy sailors respond to the scene of an Air Niugini aircraft that landed short of the runway and into a lagoon, helping passengers and crew out from the plane.

The airport manager Jimmy Emilio told Pacific Daily News media that the 737 undershot the landing at around 9:30am local time, ending up around 160mts from the runway.

Flight PX073 was operating from Pohnpei in Micronesia and was due to continue to Port Moresby.

The aircraft registered P2-PXE and was delivered 13 years ago.

Air Niugini has a fatality free record and has passed the International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit (IOSA).
