EVA Airways runs one of the strongest regional economy cabins on the market. Clean seats, fresh cabins, excellent catering and attentive crew make this airline an easy pick for regional flyers.
We flew Taipei to New Chitose Airport in Japan aboard a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner. The 3hr 50min flight gave us time to see how an Asian carrier deploys a long-haul jet on a regional route.
Seating
4.5 / 5
EVA Airways’ Boeing 787-10s are configured in a 3-3-3 layout, with seats offering 32 inches of pitch, 17.1 inches of width and 5 inches of recline. All seats have a bi-fold tray table, adjustable headrest, a 10” touchscreen and good seat pocket storage.
Overall, seats have decent padding, which supports a good level of comfort and the cabin is light, and well presented.

Customer Service
5 / 5
The customer service was excellent throughout, but what struck me most was the crew's attentiveness to safety checks, which they carried out diligently.
Catering
5 / 5
On the short three hop to Sapporo, the catering in both directions was excellent and comparable to what you’d find on medium and long haul flights. Menus were available on the in-flight entertainment screen as well as the beverage list.
On both sectors, there were two meat meal choices but no vegetarian option. However, this can be pre-booked through Manage Booking. Each meal had an appetiser, main course, dessert, fruit, a bread roll and butter.
Both meals were excellent and full of flavour. The fried chicken main on the return sector arrived a little soggy, though crisp fried food is always hard to preserve onboard.
The crew completes the meal service with tea and coffee. All used meal trays are cleared promptly after service.

Inflight Entertainment and amenities
4.5 / 5
A small pillow waits on each seat at boarding. It is a good size and soft, with a proper pillow case rather than a cheap single-use cover.
The lavatories are kept very clean throughout the flight, with crew making regular checks. Economy passengers can help themselves to not only hand wash, but a face mist and moisturiser. These amenities are not something you find on all full-service carriers. The toilet lids are soft-closing and the flush button is touch-free.
EVA Airways’ inflight entertainment system is very well designed and easy to use. Multiple languages are available from the start screen and the main menu is simple to navigate. There is a decent selection of movies though the actual number is far less than the likes of Singapore Airlines and Emirates for example.

Summary
For a relatively short economy flight, EVA really went the extra mile. Full catering on a four-hour sector, a soft pillow and seat-back screens all felt like lovely touches at this length. Pair that with a spotless cabin and a genuinely warm crew, and it is hard not to come away impressed.
