The world's best economy class is getting even better

When passengers think of the airlines with the best economy class, the same airline names tend to come up: Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, EVA Air, Virgin Atlantic, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Korean Air, STARLUX Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.

These carriers consistently deliver economy passengers a seat pitch of 31-33 inch, quality meals with multiple choices, complimentary beverages, extensive in-flight entertainment libraries, as well as blankets and pillows that make long-haul flying that little bit easier. Most importantly, they also maintain exceptional safety records, with all holding a seven-star or even seven-star PLUS safety rating from AirlineRatings.com.

But among this elite group, one airline not only took out the title of World’s Best Economy Class in 2026, but is continuing to raise the bar for what economy travel can be.

That airline is Air New Zealand.

Air New Zealand Innovation: First the Skycouch, now the Skynest

At AirlineRatings.com, we have made no secret of the fact that we believe Air New Zealand’s Skycouch is, without doubt, the best product in medium to long haul economy class travel, and you can read our full review of the product here.

However, something equally, and perhaps even more exciting, has been brewing for some time, and now it finally has an official launch date.

Air New Zealand has confirmed that its world-first Economy Skynest, will be available to book from May 18, 2026. It will operate onboard the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from November on the 16 hour New York (JFK) to Auckland route.

Located between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins the Skynest features six carefully designed pods in a bunk-style layout not too dissimilar to cabin crew sleeping quarters.

Skynest key facts and what to expect

  • a full lie-flat bed with a soft mattress

  • fresh pillow, sheets and blanket for every session

  • four-hour bookable sessions

  • privacy curtain

  • ambient lighting designed for rest and wake-up

  • individual USB-A and USB-C charging outlets

  • reading light and personal ventilation

  • crew call button and in-pod seatbelt

  • pricing from NZ$495 (around AUD$450–$495 depending on exchange rates)

Adding to the comfort is a complimentary “Nestcessities” amenity kit, which includes an eye mask, socks, ear plugs, therapeutic skincare by Aotea and a dental kit. Each ‘nest’ session will last four hours with two sessions available per flight initially.

This is the first time an airline has introduced lie-flat sleep pods specifically for Economy and Premium Economy travellers, further cementing Air New Zealand’s reputation as one of the industry’s most forward-thinking carriers.
