UK Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Air Over Missile Transfers to Russia
The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Iran’s national airline, Iran Air, and its state-owned shipping carrier, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), on Monday. The measures are in response to Iran’s transfer of ballistic missiles and military supplies to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.
Reinforcing Global Security
Foreign Secretary David Lammy commented on the sanctions, stating:
“Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable. Alongside our international partners, we were clear that any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would face a significant response.
“That’s why today we are sanctioning Iran Air and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines in response to Iran’s deliveries of ballistic missiles to Russia.
“We reiterate our call on Iran to cease its support for Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine, which continues to devastate the Ukrainian people. We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
Broader Sanctions and International Action
The sanctions against Iran Air build on previous measures imposed by the UK, the US, Germany, France, and the European Union. The airline has been fully banned from operating in EU airports, with further restrictions placed on its ability to fly through European airspace.
In September, the UK also cancelled its bilateral air services agreement with Iran and amended its sanctions regime to target materials used in the production of ballistic missiles, UAVs, and other weaponry.
Iran Air Fleet
Iran Air operates a primarily ageing Airbus fleet. According to Planespotters.net the current fleet consists of these aircraft types.
