Frenchman Benoit Vienne has colourised some images of the famous Comet 4, the first jet to cross the North Atlantic on October 4th 1958 with BOAC.

The Comet 4 first flew on April 27, 1958, and received its Certificate of Airworthiness on September 24 1958 and the first was delivered to BOAC the following day.

Sadly for the aircraft’s manufacturer de Haviland the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 were larger, faster, longer-ranged and more cost-effective than the Comet thus killing sales for the jet.

In total, only 114 Comets were built including the earlier versions the Comets 1, 2 and 3.
