BARCELONA—Heavy rainstorms swept through Barcelona on Monday, leading to flight reroutes and cancellations at the city’s airport, only days after parts of Spain endured some of the worst flooding in recent memory.

According to Aena, the airport authority, at least 17 flights were redirected from Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, with around 50 more cancelled. The intense weather also led to a full suspension of rail services across Catalonia.

Videos on social media showed parts of the airport beginning to flood, with planes navigating large pools of water on the taxiways.

The storms hit shortly after flash floods devastated parts of the Valencia region further down the coast, following torrential rains that caused rivers to overflow. The floods claimed over 200 lives, with many still unaccounted for.

The downpours caused major disruptions t Barcelona El Prat Airport where water has been seen pouring through the T-1 terminal ceiling and flooding the runway. Passengers had no choice but to wade through pools of water.
