We were a party of 6 (3 couples) on a once in a lifetime trip to US from australia. Flew with 4 separate US domestic carriers. Tickets were purchased and fully paid for in August last year. After the first 3 airlines not being able to even seat us with our spouses came DELTA. Phoned up 2 days before the flight and was told the same thing. you are guaranteed seats but seating allocation is done at check in. Arrived 3 hours before the flight and to cut a long story short – only 3 of the 6 managed to get on the overbooked flight. one more was able to get on the next flight and the remaining 2 people the next available flight – 4 hours after the original booking. Delta checkin confirmed to me that they knowingly overbook by around 12 people and then request people at the last minute to take a later flight. This is absolutely rediculous planning worthy of a 2nd or 3rd world country. As for in flight service, you may find this hard to believe but these domestic flights in the US are so paranoid of their own recession that they refuse to accept their own US currency ( which if i’m not mistaken is against the laws of all civilised countries as they are normally duty bound to accept their own legal tender!!. Never again will i fly domestic in the US. as for the actual seating space , well that is another story!! A
