Damaging Qantas Claims Are Wrong – We Explain Why

Qantas has hit back at the headlines claiming the airline had the worst on-time performance and cancelled 10 flights a day through October.

Some media outlets have taken selected data or data out of context and still ran negative stories despite detailed explanations from Qantas.

So here are the facts;

Firstly the latest government data show Qantas has continued to be the most on-time major domestic airline, despite significant disruptions caused by weather in October.

And October is the 14th consecutive month that Qantas has outperformed its major competitor for on-time flights.

The data shows 73 per cent of Qantas flights departed on time and 3.9 per cent of flights were cancelled. This compares to Virgin with 68.8 per cent of flights departing on time and a cancellation rate of 4.1 per cent.

But here are the critical factors impacting October:

  • There were only six days in October when the weather didn’t cause delays and cancellations to the network.
  • Thunderstorms and strong winds impacted operations in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra and led to single runway operations on seven separate days at Sydney Airport, which had a flow-on impact on flights across the country.
  • A huge 42 flights were cancelled due to lightning strikes on aircraft and the time required to undertake engineering checks before the aircraft returned to service.
  • Industrial action in Western Australia on October 4 by one of the pilot’s unions caused dozens of flight cancellations in Western Australia.
  • Staff Shortages with Air Services Australia air traffic controllers continue to cause disruptions.

What is not appreciated is that aircraft do up to five sectors a day and thus a delay, particularly in the morning will impact five flights – not one flight- for the rest of the day.

With tight turnarounds, there is virtually no opportunity to pick up time and get the schedule back on time.

Airlineratings.com was developed to provide everyone in the world with a one-stop shop for everything related to airlines, formed by a team of aviation editors, who have forensically researched nearly every airline in the world.

Our rating system is rated from one to seven stars on safety – with seven being the highest ranking. Within each airline, you will find the country of origin, airline code, booking URL and seat map information. The rating system takes into account a number of different factors related to audits from aviation’s governing bodies, lead associations as well as the airline’s own safety data. Every airline has a safety rating breakdown so you can see exactly how they rate.

Over 230 of the airlines on the site that carry 99 per cent of the world’s passengers have a product rating. Given that low-cost, regional and full-service carriers are so different we have constructed a different rating system for each which can be found within each airline.

  1. Surprise surprise, you trash your brand by cheating your customers, illegally sacking workers, potentially engage in illegal sales practices, provide crap service and no one believes what you say anymore, they have probably stop listening. Geoffrey Thomas is correct to point out the facts but all businesses need to be careful of being too closely associated to Qantas as their unethical image can tarnish their own brand. Qantas has such a poor image now that being part of the Qantas frequent flyer points program could now be a sales negative rather than a sales booster particularly since there is a lot of current publicity about the points as not being worthwhile. Interesting that Singapore Airlines have chosen this time to launch their Kris scheme as a general rewards scheme in Australia in competition to the Qantas scheme which is the most profitable division of the Qantas business.
  2. Sorry. Qantas is now a crap airline, only worse is Jetstar. Won't be flying them again anytime soon and don't let my staff fly them either.
  3. Well NOT really. Firstly, Qantaslink do literally thousands of flights a month for Qantas so you must combine. Secondly Virgin Australia is in as one airline whereas it is two with two AOCs, Virgin Australia Regional Airlines, which also does thousands of flights for Virgin. So, you must compare Apples with Apples. But the main thrust of the article is the media totally ignored the extraordinary weather factors of October, like 42 lightning strikes on Qantas aircraft and only 7 days not impacted by weather. Why didn’t the news outlets lead with "Weather plays havoc on airline performance."
