Qantas technology to map out travel

Qantas passengers wanting a clear idea of how far they can go a set budget can now use an interactive map to call up their travel options. The Australian-first “Where can I go?” interactive map works with frequent flyer redemptions, points plus play or cash. It includes Qantas partner airlines and allows searches based on budget, frequent flyer points, trip duration, travel period or region. The airline gives the example of a Qantas Frequent Flyer member with 70,000 points to burn. The map would give them 61 destinations from Sydney, including a return business class ticket to Perth or an economy return fare to Shanghai. A traveller with a budget of $A1500 would be shown 128 international destinations within their budget plus an additional 93 they could reach by using points to top up their cash. The airline says the technology  is part of a push to give customers more intuitive travel ideas and stimulating content across its online, digital and social channels. “The new ‘Where Can I Go?’ interactive map gives our customers access to information and inspiration when planning for their next trip - whether it’s for business or a family holiday,’’ a spokeswoman said in a statement. “And for our Frequent Flyer members, the map lets them explore, in an easy, visual way, the different travel options available for them to earn and redeem points.” The new feature will first be available through the web via desktop and tablet by visiting Qantas.com. However, the airline plans to extend its availability to mobile phones and the Qantas App later this year. The airline has a huge ready-made audience for the new technology with a loyalty program that boasted almost 12 million members at the turn of the financial year. It comes as Qantas in October is due to take delivery of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and next year launch the aircraft on non-stop flights between Perth and London.
