How STARLUX became one of the world's best airlines in just six years

Six years from launch to the world's top five

Most airlines take decades to build the reputation STARLUX has built in six years. The Taiwanese carrier flew its first service in January 2020, just as the pandemic grounded much of the industry, yet by 2026 it achieved fifth place in our World's Best Airlines awards. STARLUX marketed itself as a luxury airline from day one, which gave a small carrier with a short route map the kind of identity that usually takes decades to earn. The cabins carry a custom design from BMW Designworks and the look runs consistently from check-in to the cabin.

Why Snoopy is on the boarding pass and those striking metallic planes

The smartest marketing move has been a partnership with Peanuts, which turned Snoopy into a reason to book. The collaboration launched in June 2024 with special boarding passes and name tags featuring Snoopy and Charlie Brown, while economy and premium economy passengers found the characters on cups, napkins, playing cards and meal packaging.

The response was strong enough that STARLUX brought it back and extended it. The 2025 campaign ran for seven months instead of five, reached US routes for the first time and added more than 10 themed items including four collectible boarding pass designs.

In 2026 the partnership returned for a third year, with a seasonal theme that sees Snoopy and his friends travelling through spring, summer, autumn and winter. Select boarding passes and cups come in two designs handed out at random across flights, which gives collectors a reason to fly again, and the campaign runs on routes worldwide until 31 December 2026.

The tie-up reaches well beyond the aircraft, with co-branded merchandise sold through inflight duty free, the STARLUX online store and 7-Eleven stores across Taiwan.

In another stroke of marketing genius, STARLUX Airlines has unveiled two Airbus A350-1000s painted by Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama in standout and iconic silver and gold liquid-metal liveries. Not only is STARLUX Airlines painting the exterior of two aircraft, but the airline is also extending the AIRSORAYAMA experience to the cabins to create a truly unforgettable experience.

Passengers will experience themed amenity kits, co-branded merchandise and a bespoke safety video, which you can watch here.

STARLUX Airlines worked closely with Airbus and aircraft painting experts, Mankiewicz, to develop a highly concentrated special mica colour shade with multi-coating techniques to coat the fuselage with the fluid appearance of metal.

All STARLUX passengers will have a comfortable and all inclusive journey

STARLUX keeps things simple with an all-Airbus fleet, flying the A321neo on shorter routes and the A330-900neo, A350-900 and A350-1000 on its widebody network. A small number of aircraft types means passengers get a consistent experience from one flight to the next, and it lets the airline refine one product instead of juggling several. Every seat on every aircraft has a seat-back screen, and every passenger will be served meals, snacks and beverages commensurate with flight time and cabin class. Blankets, pillows and amenity kits are provided to all passengers regardless of cabin class.

STARLUX business class raises the bar

Business class is where STARLUX competes head to head with the world's best. On the A350-900, the airline fits 26 Collins Aerospace Elements suites in a reverse herringbone layout, each with its own privacy door and a bed that stretches to six feet seven inches, while the A350-1000 lifts that to 40 suites with direct aisle access for every seat. Passengers can choose between the Star Gourmet menu, curated by Michelin-starred chef Lam Ming Kin, or the Exclusive International menu. Each suite is fitted with a 24-inch 4K UHD touchscreen featuring Bluetooth headphone pairing. Complimentary Wi-Fi is provided as well as a luxury amenity kit that even has a sheet mask. Even the narrowbody A321 aircraft feature lie-flat seats in business class.

STARLUX passengers are guaranteed to have a wonderful dining experience

STARLUX Premium economy, it’s one you want to try

Premium economy gives travellers a middle ground that many airlines on STARLUX's regional routes don't offer. On the A350, STARLUX gives its 36 premium economy seats 40 inches of pitch, and every seat in the cabin comes with a legrest and footrest, a feature some airlines keep for the bulkhead row only. This alone means the airline gives some of the most legroom in premium economy among global competitors. Passengers also have access to free Wi-Fi, a 15.6-inch 4K screen and passengers can connect their own Bluetooth headphones on most aircraft.

As the image shows, premium economy passengers really do get a large amount of space as well as a large entertainment screen and drinks table.

With a footrest, legrest and significant recline, long-haul passengers should be able to get plenty of rest.

Starlux economy class, a boutique experience

Economy runs in a 3-3-3 layout with 31 to 32 inches of pitch and 18-inch seats, which is in line with most full-service long-haul airlines. Every seat has a six-way adjustable leather headrest to cradle the neck and a 4K personal screen. Power is available at the seat, with a universal outlet and a USB-C port shared between each pair of seats. Dental kits, eye shades, ear plugs and slippers are available on request or on overnight flights will be at your seat when boarding. Meals arrive with metal cutlery rather than plastic, and the presentation is arguably the best we have seen. Economy passengers have access to unlimited free messaging (no audio, images or video) though eligible applications including WhatsApp/LINE/Facebook Messenger etc.

In terms of economy class comfort, the size of the blanket and pillow, along with the meal service, large crisp screen and legroom, mean passengers can expect a comfortable flight

This is the sort of meal you can expect on a short regional flight on STARLUX. It's more akin to what we see in many premium economy cabins: good food, beautiful presentation and, don't forget, that wonderful Snoopy branding.

As our friend Ronnie found on a recent STARLUX A321 economy flight, even a two hour hop feels like a boutique experience.

Where does STARLUX fly next and will it jeep rising to the top?

STARLUX is now taking its product into new markets. Prague became its first European destination on 1 August 2026 with three weekly A350-900 flights, and the airline moved the route to the A350-1000 in its Airsorayama livery from 1 September before adding a fourth weekly frequency in October. Zurich and Barcelona are planned for 2027 once approvals come through, with Sydney and Auckland flagged for the same year. Chicago, Dallas, Washington and New York remain under evaluation in the US, and further A350-1000 deliveries would give the airline the capacity to open them.

STARLUX sits outside the global alliances but keeps its North American reach through Alaska Airlines, whose Atmos Rewards members can book STARLUX flights and whose own flight numbers have appeared on the routes since 1 July 2026. A partnership with Etihad Guest, announced in August, extends that reach into Etihad's network
