AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas has won the Best Breaking News story at the Aviation Media Awards for his story, ‘MH370: Probable location found with revolutionary tracking’, which revealed a new technology that promises a precise location for the missing Malaysia Airlines 777. The awards were presented on Tuesday night at special awards dinner in Singapore in conjunction with the Singapore Air Show. Mr. Thomas was unable to attend due to Western Australian COVID restrictions. READ: Bonza announces 25 routes and 16 destinations The story, published in November last year, covered the revolutionary new tracking technology which has enabled British aerospace engineer Richard Godfrey to identify a far more precise crash position for MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean. According to Richard Godfrey MH370 impacted the ocean 1,933km due west of Perth at 33.177°S 95.300°E and lies at a depth of 4,000m in a very mountainous area with deep ravines and a volcano. The location is in the zone where the University of WA Head of Oceanography Professor Charitha Pattiaratchi claims MH370 is located. The revelation is expected to provide the impetus for a new search later next year. Mr. Thomas was nominated for a record three gongs at the 2022 Aerospace Media Awards. The other nominations include a Best Business Aviation category submission with an article on the 20th anniversary of the collapse of Ansett which told the story of the extra operational and salary costs that weighed down the failed airline. His final nomination in the Best Commercial Aviation category was for a four-part series celebrating 100 years of flying in Western Australia. In 2020 Thomas (below) won the awards’ Best Safety, Training & Simulation category and the Outstanding Achievement Award for his coverage of the MH370 disaster. Geoffrey Thomas
