About Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is a major U.S. airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas, known for its low-cost carrier model and distinctive corporate culture. It was established in the late 20th century with an initial focus on regional travel within Texas. The airline pioneered a new approach to air travel with its point-to-point routing system as opposed to the traditional hub-and-spoke model used by other airlines. This strategy allowed for quick turnarounds and consistent service, facilitating frequent, reliable travel options for passengers. Over the decades, Southwest has grown significantly and now offers a wide network of domestic routes, along with some international destinations. It has built a reputation for its customer-friendly policies, including free checked bags and a lack of change fees, which have differentiated it in a market where additional fees are common. Southwest Airlines operates a fleet that is unique in that it consists of aircraft from a single family of jet airliners. This uniformity allows for reduced costs in terms of maintenance, training, and operations. The airline is known for its efficient use of its fleet, maintaining one of the highest utilization rates in the industry. This operational efficiency is achieved through practices like quick aircraft turnaround times, which have historically helped to keep flight schedules frequent and fares low. Southwest's operational strategies have been widely studied and have influenced practices across the airline industry worldwide. Its focus on keeping operations simple and efficient continues to be a core aspect of its business model, promoting both growth and customer satisfaction. Southwest is renowned for its exceptional customer service, which is characterized by a friendly and informal ethos. Flight attendants are known for their jovial attitudes and sometimes humorous flight announcements, making the travel experience more relaxed and enjoyable for passengers. The airline places a strong emphasis on building positive relationships with its customers, often going above and beyond to maintain customer loyalty. It also offers a variety of services that cater to convenience and simplicity, such as a straightforward rewards program for frequent flyers and an open seating policy, where passengers can choose their own seats upon boarding rather than having assigned seating. This approach to service, combined with competitive pricing and reliable operations, has solidified Southwest's reputation as a favored airline among frequent domestic travelers.

Lufthansa

Lufthansa lost my luggage on a flight within Europe. Inconvenient, but mistakes happen. The airport’s lost luggage officer was very helpful and filed a report immediately. A week later an airport officer advised that the bag had turned up and I was able to collect it from the airport. It had a tag on it showing that it had been sent to the wrong airport. So why I am writing this? Well, my issue is that Lufthansa made no attempt to contact me at the time and despite months of trying, no apology or compensation. Lufthansa knew immediately about the loss because the airport had sent them a report and there was a note on the Lufthansa website saying that the loss had been reported. But I was given zero information about whether my luggage was still in transit or lost for good. The website would not issue a tracking number because of the airport report. A few days later, assuming that the baggage would not be returned, I made a compensation claim, for which I simply received a proforma request for more information, without acknowledging that they already knew where the bag was. Months later, still with nothing from Lufthansa, my travel agent advised me to lodge a feedback form. Once again, nothing happened. When the agent followed up, Lufthansa’s offered only platitudes, implying that reporting of the luggage loss and the problems with their tracking and contact system were my fault. They still have never acknowledged that they knew of the loss, let alone acknowledge that I am out of pocket. Months later, they are even asking for proof of the airport’s lost luggage report, even though they were advised on the day of the flight and they eventually found the luggage and forwarded it. I have no complaints about the cabin staff or on-board meals. But their customer relations are appalling.
