Two flights, two and from Bali, with Jetstar in January. Both ran very smoothly without any issues. Yes, leg room was a bit restricted but not as much as other budget airlines. On board food/drink selection was adequate for a short 3 hour flight and I came prepared with my own entertainment which made the time pass quickly. Book tickets with a budget airline with eyes open and it shouldn’t be an issue. Will fly with Jetstar again. My ratings are based on past experiences with other budget airlines and it would be unfair to compare Jetstar with non-budget airlines.

the flight was cheap and cheerful, i wouldn’t say it was fantastic, but it did depart and arrive on time i guess. as far as a low cost carrier goes its probably the best I’ve been on, the crew were very friendly and the whole trip had a very professional feel

Appalling Airline. No wonder they have such a poor rating. Rude staff with a bad attitude, flight cancellations and just don’t compare with the likes of Virgin. I highly recommend paying marginally more upfront and flying with another airline. For example, a blanket will cost you $20.00! Inflight entertainment will cost you $30.00! A cup of coffee will cost you $4.50 (and its crap) Food is extra on international flights, 20kg luggage limit and anything over costs an absolute fortune. Audio is so poor you can’t hear the movie. You think you’re getting a well priced flight but when you factor in all the extra’s you’re actually not saving money. Because of Jetstar, I won’t fly Qantas either as they are co-owned. At one stage I would only fly Qantas but now only fly Virgin on any interstate flights. Virgin is easy to deal with, staff are pleasant and the overall culture within the organisation is extremely good.

EDITORS COMMENT: Jetstar are a low cost airline and all the extra costs are made available through the booking process. Everyone is best to go right through the booking process and then compare prices when it comes to low cost carriers as the extras do add up.

Brutal Money Grabbers. I had 2 carry on pieces of luggage. One was 7.1 kg, ie. 100g over the 7kg allowance. They made me check it in, entirely ridiculous. I had another bag which was less than three kilos. They charged me $60 “overweight” surcharge for a trip from Sydney to Melbourne. If I wore a jacket they would have made me to have it weighed too. One lady was asked to put her handbag on to the scales. The whole experience at the gate was disgraceful. They make all passengers line up for the weighing. Once that done, passengers need line up again for boarding. Queuing is so much fun, isn’t it? Staff talk back to you when informed about dissatisfaction. See more details in Daniels review below. Never happened to me in 45 years of flying with any other airline.

Warning – Flier beware! Jetstar imposes a highly restrictive and inflexible baggage weight policy that is designed to maximize their profit at the expense of customer satisfaction. I’m speaking as someone who has flown with many airlines all over the world for over 2 million Km. Jetstar does clearly articulate the requirements that must be met to avoid their unreasonable excess baggage weight fees, but if you are unaware and are over their limit, you will be unpleasantly surprised. In my case, my carry on bag was 12 Kg, 5 Kg above their 7 Kg maximum. I could not fit anymore items into my checked baggage to offset this weight. So, Jetstar charged me, not for the excess (5 Kg), but for the whole 12 Kg at NZD 15/Kg or NZD 180! This was far more than the cost of my seat on the flight from Queenstown, NZ to Auckland. The whole experience was the only blemish on a fantastic 2-week trip throughout New Zealand. My suggestion to future Jetstar passengers: travel with a portable luggage scale or consider flying with an airline that is more customer-oriented than Jetstar.
