A very dramatic video illustrating the powerful downdraft of a thunderstorm has been posted by @maz_jovanovich. Sadly many aircraft have been lost in thunderstorms over the decades of aviation, although with modern weather radar it is rare today and in a modern airliner even less so. Between 1950 and 2000 there were 17 fatal losses attributed to thunderstorms.
