Three passengers have died and 117 have been injured when a Turkish Pegasus Airlines’ Boeing 737-800 crashed on landing during a thunderstorm.
Incredibly the 737 landed 1950m down a 3000m runway and overran the runway at 116km/hr and impacted a wall.
According to Aviation Herald the 737-800, “registration TC-IZK performing Flt PC-2193 from Izmir to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport (Turkey) with 177 passengers and 6 crew, landed on runway 06 at 18:20L (15:20Z) but overran the end of the runway, impacted the airport perimeter wall and broke into three parts about 170 meters/550 feet past the runway end.”
Sabiha Gokcen is a secondary airport with one runway and not the new Istanbul Airport which has four.

At the time there were gusty winds associated with passing thunderstorms.
Aviation-Safety.net has more detail thus;
“At about 18:17 the Tower controller cleared another flight for takeoff from runway 06, reporting wind 300 degrees at 11 knots, gusting to 21 knots. The subsequent arrival was flight 2193, which was cleared to land with wind information given as 270 degrees at 22 knots, gusting to 30 knots. This translates to a 19 knot (35km/hr) tailwind.
“Since the wind was shifting the controller reported to a flight on the ground that it was to expect a runway change for departure.
“At 18:19 Pegasus 2193 touched down, but failed to come to a complete stop on the runway. It overran and went down an embankment, breaking in three. The aircraft came to rest about 20 m below runway elevation.
“Runway 06 is a concrete runway with a Landing Distance Available (LDA) of 3000 m. At the runway end there is a 65 m long stopway, followed by antenna array, perimeter road and a downslope.”
Aviation Herald says that “according to Mode-S data transmitted by the aircraft, it landed long and hot.
It touched down an incredible 1950 meters (6400 feet) past the threshold (start of the runway) and just about 1000 meters (3300 feet) before the runway end.
The 737 overran the end of the runway at about 63 knots (116km/hr) over ground veering slightly to the left (last transponder transmission), hit a localizer antenna and went over an airport road and a cliff and impacted the airport perimeter wall.
According to Aviation Herald last month there was a similar incident with “a Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration TC-CCK performing flight PC-747 from Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (Turkey) with 164 people on board.”
“It landed on Sabiha Gokcen Airport’s runway 06 at 09:09L (06:09Z) but shortly after touchdown veered left and came to a stop with all gear on soft ground off the left runway edge about 1000 meters/3330 feet down the runway. The aircraft was evacuated via slides. There were no injuries, the damage to the aircraft is being assessed.”
