For travellers curious about how China Eastern’s economy class stacks up against its international rivals, this journey offers an insightful case study. With competitive fares and a comprehensive network across Asia, the question arises — does the lower ticket price come at the expense of the onboard experience? From a compact but orderly check-in at Gatwick to punctual operations and polished safety procedures, the airline demonstrates competence in the essentials. Yet, as the hours unfold at 35,000 feet, it becomes clear that while China Eastern delivers the fundamentals well, it rarely goes beyond them.

Seating

2.5 / 5

The Boeing 777-300ERs are configured in a 3-4-3 layout in economy class, offering a seat pitch of 32 inches, width of 17.05 inches, and recline of 6 inches. Although the pitch and recline are greater than those on some competing Chinese carriers, the narrow width results in a noticeably tight fit on longer sectors.

Seat cushions were firm with limited lumbar support, and the low armrests reduced comfort for extended periods. Adjustable headrests with foldable wings are fitted at every seat and are a welcome feature on long-haul flights.

While the cabin design in beige and cream tones appears dated and lacks visual appeal, overall cleanliness was excellent. Seats, tray tables, and even window frames were spotless on boarding, suggesting strong standards in cabin upkeep.

Customer Service

4 / 5

Cabin crew demonstrated efficiency and operational competence throughout both sectors. However, the level of warmth and approachability was limited. Requests for additional drinks or snacks were often met reluctantly, and service delivery appeared focused on completion speed rather than passenger engagement.

Uniform presentation and personal hygiene were of a high standard, and all crew were attentive to safety procedures and cabin compliance checks.

One shortfall noted during check-in however was staff professionalism. Several ground agents were overheard expressing frustration with passenger upgrade requests, which detracted from the otherwise efficient operation.

Catering

2 / 5

Meal service commenced approximately one hour after take-off, combining the main meal and initial beverage round. Three trolleys operated in the rear economy cabin, which caused uneven pacing across aisles.

Two options were available (chicken noodles or beef with rice) on both sectors. There was no third or vegetarian option offered, and this could disadvantage passengers who did not pre-book a special meal.

Food quality was below international standards for long-haul economy travel. The chicken noodles were bland and overcooked, while the pasta entrée was average. The side items included smoked salmon, yoghurt, and shortbread outbound from London, though bread was served only after the main meal had been completed on both sectors.

Inbound to London, the quality seemed slightly better with a pork, rice and vegetable stirfry chosen

Beverage options included soft drinks, juices, beer, water, tea, and coffee; however, no wine was available. A second beverage round was conducted approximately 30 minutes after the meal. Warm beer was offered on both sectors and returned to the trolley.

A light pre-landing meal was served, with only one option available (noodles outbound, rice inbound). Catering uplifted from London appeared slightly better in presentation and tray content.

Inflight Entertainment, WiFi and amenities

3.5 / 5

The IFE system offered a modest but acceptable selection of content. The international section included 44 Western titles, such as The Greatest Showman, The Lion King, Guardians of the Galaxy, and several Avengers films. Chinese content was extensive, with over 50 domestic titles available, as well as a selection of short videos promoting tourism and SkyTeam services.

A choice of 10 games was also provided. While the system functioned smoothly, the interface and content range lag behind that of major international competitors.

Wi-Fi is advertised on the 777-300ER fleet, however, instructions for access were inconsistent. Only the return flight featured a scannable QR code, and even then, it did not link to an active internet portal once connected.

Each seat was pre-set with a pillow and blanket of standard quality for long-haul economy travel. Headphones were distributed around 25 minutes after take-off rather than being placed on seats prior to boarding, which is inefficient given the risk of passengers already being asleep.

No amenity kits are provided in economy class.

Summary and recommendations

China Eastern Airlines delivers a competent but unremarkable long-haul economy experience. The airline maintains strong standards of cabin cleanliness and operational efficiency, yet the overall service lacks warmth and engagement.

All flights pushed back on time, with the London Gatwick – Shanghai Pudong sector arriving one hour late due to extended taxi delays at Gatwick prior to departure. Crew demonstrated strong attention to safety procedures throughout, with consistent cabin checks, seatbelt enforcement, and adherence to galley security requirements.

Food quality and beverage selection fall below international averages, and Wi-Fi functionality remains unreliable. However, the punctuality, professionalism in safety procedures, and well-maintained cabins are notable positives.

For the price of direct flights to China in relation to other carriers who include a layover, China Eastern offers an acceptable and safe service.

AirlineRatings recommends China Eastern for the cost-conscious passenger who is not looking for added extras and without a timely layover.
