I was denied boarding when I tried to check in less than 1 hour before the departure due to circumstances beyond my control. They were unable to rebook me that day since there were no other flights and they don't have a relationship with other airlines that allows travelling on another carrier. I walked to the next counter and rebooked on Southwest. I contacted Frontier for a refund (counter staff are not empowered to act on this) as I had purchased a "bundle" which included refundability. The next day they denied the refund or any sort of compensation citing fine print conditions. Cheap airlines come with liabilities that are not apparent to the casual observer.
