On July 31st, I flew WestJet from Calgary to Toronto heading back to Washington, DC, but as we had smoke in the cockpit, we had to land in Winnipeg. The crew handled the evacuation with courtesy, humor, and efficiency. When on the ground, they continually kept us updated...even when they had no additional information. "We don't know anything more," they'd say apologetically, "but will let you know when we do. In the meantime, we're here to talk with if you need us." The net result was 84 of us missed connections, but all was handled with such openness, pleasantness, and empathy that there was scarcely a ruffled feather. In fact, when the airline hostess thanked the passengers for their patience and forbearance, the whole plane broke into applause. It was a textbook case of brilliant handling of a difficult situation. Kudos to a well trained and responsive crew! I was impressed...and I was one of the ones who had to stay the night in Toronto and scramble to retrieve my luggage from the striking luggage handlers. I'll fly WestJet any day.
