Ryanair certainly deserves credit for challenging the virtual monopoly of state-owned airlines in the 90s, but I believe they went a bit too far in their quest for savings. First of all, many of the small airports they use have very poor or no public transport connection; depending on your final destination, this can make the trip much longer and more expensive than expected. In 2008, I stopped using Ryanair after rather rude staff, the abolishment of seat reservation and the requirement of online check-in had added to my frustration. (After a hike in the Alps, I went straight to the airport - I didn't come across many printing facilities in the mountains...!) More recently, I tried them again and found that the staff had improved a lot. Still, if I can avoid them, I prefer any other airline as you don't get caught that easily in their small-print.
