I have previously rated SA very highly, but their service in this instance has plummeted. Prior to purchasing my return ticket, I rang SA to inquire about the Gold member additional baggage allowance, knowing that my outward trip was as KrisFlyer Gold and that the Gold Membership would expire whilst I was overseas. I was informed by SA that since the return ticked was being purchased while I was a Gold Member, then the baggage allowance increase (an extra 20 Kg) would apply for both directions regardless of the fact that the card would expire. Seem fair and logical enough to me! I was flying with a heavy tool box and my suitcase so it was very important to know I could get everything (about 40Kg) back home again. Well, now it's time to go home, SA have changed their mind and tell me I only have a 30Kg limit, and it will cost me 45 GBP /Kilo to fly the excess 10Kg home again. 450GBP! I must have had 5 return calls now from Singapore now saying "I'm sorry Mr .." Seemingly, it appears that SA have no staff with any authority to give me back 20Kg allowance or add 10Kg to get me home with my stuff. The solution would cost them nothing I would not be here today, as a very KrossFlyer
