AirAsia continues to cement its position as a leading low-cost airline group in the Asia-Pacific region, with Australia remaining a key and growing market. In 2024, four of the seven airlines operating under the AirAsia brand delivered more flights to and from Australia than ever before, driven by strong and consistent demand for affordable, reliable air travel.

Since resuming services post-pandemic, AirAsia has not only bounced back but returned stronger, introducing enhanced customer service offerings while maintaining one of the lowest cost structures globally. This ensures passengers continue to enjoy the best-value fares to over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond.

Record Growth in 2024 and More to Come in 2025

In 2024, the AirAsia Group recorded its highest number of flights between Australia and Asia, responding to rising demand across multiple markets. More routes and destinations are set to launch in 2025, further expanding access for Australian travellers.

The group’s services include:

  • AirAsia X Malaysia (D7): Operating widebody A330 aircraft featuring premium flatbeds, quiet zones, and economy seating. D7 flies daily from Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to its main hub in Kuala Lumpur.

  • Thai AirAsia X (XJ): Also utilizing A330 aircraft with similar premium features, XJ operates six times weekly from Sydney to Bangkok.

  • AirAsia Malaysia (AK): Using A320 aircraft, AK complements AirAsia X’s Perth–Kuala Lumpur service during peak seasons and will begin flying from Kuala Lumpur to Darwin for the first time in mid-2025.

  • AirAsia Indonesia (ust 2024, QZ launched new Bali–Cairns services (three times weekly), with additional routes from QZ): Operates A320s from Perth to Jakarta (four times weekly) and Bali (four times daily). In AugBali to Adelaide and Darwin starting in 2025.

Around 20% of the group’s Australian passengers use Fly Thru connecting services, a figure expected to grow in 2025 and beyond as network optimization remains a key strategic focus.

Seamless Connectivity to Asia and Beyond

From major hubs in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Bangkok (Thailand), Jakarta and Bali (Indonesia), Manila (Philippines), and Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Australian travellers can access over 130 destinations. Fly Thru services are being further enhanced to provide more seamless, value-driven connections to key destinations across Asia, including Japan, Korea, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

AirAsia’s mega hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok along with secondary hubs like Bali, are being strategically optimized to deliver better connectivity across the region through a mix of short, medium, and long-haul routes.

A Look Back: The AirAsia Story

Founded in 2001 by Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranun, AirAsia has grown from a struggling airline with just two aircraft and 200 staff into Asia’s largest low-cost carrier. Today, it boasts a fleet of over 200 aircraft and a workforce of 21,000 across five regional airlines based in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia.

With a mission to democratize air travel under its iconic tagline “Now Everyone Can Fly”, AirAsia has flown more than 800 million passengers to date connecting people, cultures, and economies across the region.

About AirAsia X and Thai AirAsia X

AirAsia X (AAX), the group’s medium-haul affiliate, has operated an all-A330 widebody fleet since launching in 2007. Together with Thai AirAsia X (TAAX), these carriers have transported more than 25 million guests, starting with the inaugural service from Kuala Lumpur to Australia’s Gold Coast.

AAX and TAAX continue to connect Australia to a wide range of destinations via their hubs in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, leveraging AirAsia’s extensive short- and medium-haul network to destinations like India, Cambodia, Japan, and more.
