I travel regularly with Singapore Airlines and Silk Air is its budget carrier to many of the smaller and less popular cities around SE Asia. On this occasion I flew from Singapore to Hanoi. I have flown on many Silk Air flights and they are all very much the same. Tend to leave on time, usually full and very crammed in. They are all small planes with one aisle down the middle and three seats on each side. Not my favourite configuration as they do feel very claustrophobic. The planes seem relatively old as well. Also there is no seat back entertainment which really makes the flight seem longer than it is. The seats themselves also seem to be small. This flight was another typical Silk Air flight except for one major exception. A passenger decided to smoke in the toilets and then returned to his seat where he subsequently lit up again. As you can imagine all hell broke loose. The flight stewardess to her credit handled the situation appropriately. She was extremely authoritative and conveyed in no uncertain terms that smoking was not permitted. Of course the stewardess was Singaporean and speaking English while the passenger was Vietnamese and therefore just granted and nodded in reply. Upon arrival in Hanoi I suspect the passenger was briefly spoken to but no action appeared to have been taken as the passenger was seen queuing up in the immigration line not far behind me.
I would recommend this airline as they have good connecting flights and are managed by Singapore Airlines so tend to be efficient and on time. They are certainly no frills with old planes, usually full, no entertainment and lousy food
