The man who protested corporate support for social issues such as same-sex marriage by planting a lemon meringue pie in the face of Qantas boss Alan Joyce on May 10 has been hit with a lifetime ban by the airline.

The ban means 67-year-old Tony Overheu will not be able to fly on Qantas, Jetstar or Qantas codeshare flights such as those operated by alliance partner Emirates.

The penalty is similar to one which would be applied to a person who attacked a Qantas staff member on a plane or in an airport  lounge.

Overheu, who later apologised, is also facing charges of common assault, trespass and damage over the alleged incident at a business breakfast in Perth.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrate’s Court on June 7.
