Aussie domestic passenger numbers fall for third straight month

Qantas

Domestic flights in Australia were less full in February as passenger numbers fell for the third consecutive month and outpaced a fall in airline capacity.

The lack-luster growth was seen in overall February domestic passenger numbers, which includes charter operations and was down 0.4 percent to 4.7m compared to a year ago.

But it was more pronounced when it came to airline or regular public transport (RPT) traffic.

Passenger numbers on flights operated by airlines fell 0.7 percent to 4.5 million, according to newly released government figures.

The industry’s preferred traffic measure, revenue passenger kilometres, fell 1.2 percent compared with the year ago, while capacity decreased by 0.3 percent.

READ: Jet Airways grounded.

This compared with the global growth in domestic travel demand for February of 6.4 percent and an overall traffic growth figure of 5.3 percent worldwide.

Uncertainty about a forthcoming federal election and the impact on consumer confidence of low wages growth and a falling property market are among the factors likely to have contributed to the negative result in Australia.

The fall in passenger numbers outpaced a cut in capacity to drive down the industry-wide load factor from 78 percent last year to 77.3 percent in February.

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics noted in its report that load factors decreased on 36 of the 65 RPT routes it monitors.

Routes with the biggest fall in RPT passengers numbers for the month included Proserpine-Sydney (down 31.1 percent), Brisbane-Proserpine (down 18.5 percent), Geraldton-Perth (down 17.6 percent) and Darwin-Perth (down 16.2 percent).

Routes showing increases included Brisbane-Emerald (up 19.2 percent), Brisbane-Hobart (up 14.3 percent), Brisbane-Mt Isa (up 11.5 percent) and Kalgoorlie-Perth (up 11.1 percent).

Domestic airline passenger numbers for the year ending February 2019 are still ahead of the year ending February 2018 — but only by 1.3 percent.

Growth in the mature Australian market is typically at the bottom of the basket of domestic markets highlighted by the International Air Transport Association in its monthly traffic figures.

IATA noted in its analysis for February that traffic growth had moderated after a strong start in January.

Director general Alexandre de Juniac said this was in line with concerns about the broader economic outlook and a softening of confidence.

“Continuing trade tensions between the US and China, and unresolved uncertainty over Brexit are also weighing on the outlook for travel,”  he said.

Qantas has opened its expanded Brisbane international lounge in time for Easter with a new ground-level area providing seating for an additional 100 customers.

The addition expands the lounge, opened in 2016, by 25 percent and from two levels to three. The new area will open daily from 7:30 am to 11 am to cater for the airline’s morning peak.

Qantas operates 58 direct international services each week from Brisbane to Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Noumea, Port Moresby, Singapore and Tokyo.

The Queensland capital is seen as one of its key markets.

“With the majority of our international flights from Brisbane departing in the morning, the expanded space will give our customers a more relaxed lounge experience,’’ Qantas Group chief customer officer Vanessa Hudson said.

“We’ve taken over previously underutilized airport space to create an additional lounge area that accommodates more customers with comfortable seats, great food and given we go through five kilograms of coffee a day, a stylish barista-station with the latest coffee-making technology.”

The additional space aims to reflect Queensland’s relaxed approach to living and features traditional white wood paneling on the walls, subtle lighting, curved ceiling and bright timber finishes.

The airline says the furniture is inspired by the tropical north with timber café seating and low slung lounges while rugs “bring color and texture reminiscent of the reef, sandbars and waterways of Queensland’s coast and inlets”.

The lounge features a buffet on the ground and main level and a breakfast hatch on the mezzanine serving cooked-to-order dishes available customers seated anywhere in the lounge.

The bar on the main level and new ground level serves craft beer, premium wine and barista coffee.

Other features of the international lounge – which is open to business class customers, eligible Qantas frequent flyers and oneworld members – include a business center, shower suites and Sofitel service.

The airline also announced Thursday it would launch new direct seasonal flights between Sydney and Japanese skiing hotspot Sapporo to meet the growing demand for travel from Australia

Qantas will fly three times weekly to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport between  December 16, 2019, and March 28, 2020, using upgraded Airbus A330 aircraft.

The airline said the new service would offer more than 10,000 seats on the route.

Jet Airways Grounded

Jet Airways has ceased operations and is grounded.

The Indian airline has issued the following statement.

Late last night, Jet Airways was informed by the State Bank of India (SBI), on behalf of the consortium of Indian Lenders, that they are unable to consider its request for critical interim funding.

Since no emergency funding from the lenders or any other source is forthcoming, the
airline will not be able to pay for fuel or other critical services to keep the operations
going. Consequently, with immediate effect, Jet Airways is compelled to cancel all its
international and domestic flights. The last flight will operate today.

This decision has been taken after a painstaking evaluation of all alternatives that were
made available to the Company and after receiving guidance and advice on the same
from its Board of Directors. Jet Airways has informed the DGCA, and the Ministries of
Civil Aviation and Finance and other relevant government institutions, of this course of
action.

Over the last several weeks and months, the company has tried every means possible
to seek both interim and long-term funding. Unfortunately, despite its very best efforts,
the airline has been left with no other choice today but to go ahead with a temporary
suspension of flight operations.

This has been a very difficult decision but without interim funding, the airline is simply
unable to conduct flight operations in a manner that delivers to the very reasonable
expectations of its guests, employees, partners and service providers.

After 25 years of sharing the Joy of Flying with Indian and international guests, Jet
Airways has been forced to take this extreme measure as prolonged and sustained
efforts with lenders and authorities did not yield the desired results.

Essential services needed to support guest services and the re-commencement of the
flight operations will be kept onboard until further notice.

Jet Airways will now await the bid finalization process by SBI and the consortium of
Indian Lenders.

In its response to the airline, the lenders have said, “The Expressions of Interest (EOI)
have been received and bid documents have been issued to the eligible recipients today.
The bid documents inter alia has solicited plans for a quick revival of the company. The
bid process will conclude on 10th May 2019 … We are actively working to try and ensure
that the bid process leads to a viable solution for the company.”

Jet Airways will continue to support the bid process initiated by the lenders.

The airline will inform all guests about the temporary suspension of flight operations
via text message or email to the contact details listed in their bookings.

Jet Airways sincerely and profusely apologizes for the disruption to the travel plans of
all its guests. The airline would like to thank them for their continued patronage, support and loyalty over the years.

Jet Airways is hopeful that it will be able to bring the Joy of Flying back to its guests as
soon as possible. Over the past 25 years, Jet Airways has established itself as India’s
airline of choice and the flag-bearer of warm Indian hospitality around the world.

The airline has proudly fuelled India’s economic engine, enabling business travelers and
tourists alike to traverse the length and breadth of India and the world. Even during
the toughest of times, Jet Airways employees have worn a smile on their face and put
their duty to its guests and the nation first.

Above all, the airline would like to express its sincere gratitude to all its employees and
stakeholders that have stood by the Company in these trying times. We hope to bring
the flying sun back into the skies.

Air France offers free flights to help Notre Dame

Air France is to offer free flights to people involved in the reconstruction of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The 850-year-old cathedral was extensively damaged in a fire Monday night that ripped through its spire and roof for several hours, shocking people around the world.

More than 600m euros have already been pledged to restore the cathedral, one of the world’s iconic cultural attractions.

READ:  Air France innovations help take the stress out of travel.

Although the famous bell towers and rose windows remain intact, there is damage to the building’s medieval wooden structures as well as worries about the effect of the fire on its stonework and even its much-photographed gargoyles.

Some experts are asking whether the work of the original artisans can be recreated but the feeling is strong that it should be rebuilt.

French President Emmanuel Macron this week pledged to rebuild the cathedral within five years, saying  France will mobilize for the effort.

“We are a people of builders,’’ he said. “We have so much to rebuild and we will rebuild. We will make it even more beautiful than before and I want it done within the next five years.”

However, experts say the project could take a decade and possibly longer.

The French national carrier, part of the wider Air France-KLM Group, said staff had been deeply affected and saddened by the fire.

It said Air France-KLM chief executive Benjamin Smith had joined with the aviation group’s president and Air France chief executive Anne Rigail to allow the carrier to “ensure the free transport of all the official actors who will take part in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris”.

“In addition, the Air France-KLM Group will set up a voluntary collection system for its customers in the coming days to help finance the reconstruction work,” it said.

Other companies to pledge support for the reconstruction include tech giant Apple as well as the owners of investment firm Artemis, luxury brand LVMH and L’Oreal.

More than 400 MH370, MH17 compensation claims settled

The compensation claims of 428 families of victims of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 and MH370 disasters have been settled but 125 families are still battling over the final amount.

The figures were contained in a parliamentary reply from Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke and reported by The Malaysian Reserve business daily.

READ: Famous wreck hunter David Mearns supports levy to find MH370.

The biggest split is over the controversial disappearance of MH370, where 130 families have signed off and compensation but 109 have only received a partial sum and are still negotiating over the final figure.

The Boeing 777 disappeared in mysterious circumstances on March 14, 2014, and has not been found despite to extensive searches of potential crash sites in the Southern Indian Ocean.

Dozens of theories, some of them bizarre, have been put forward about what happened but many industry observers believed it was a murder-suicide with Captain Zaharie Ahmed Shah most likely responsible.

MH 17, also a B777, was shot down over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, by a Russian-made missile believed to have been launched by Russian separatists.

Of the 298 families involved in that tragedy, 282 have settled their claims and only 16 remain outstanding.

The business daily said it was unclear from the letter who had made the payments but noted Loke said the compensation payments had been assessed under the 1999 Montreal Convention and varied according to circumstances.

Families were offered interim payments of $US50,000 in 2014 and the paper said some accepted these payments, believed to have been paid by the insurance consortium led by Allianz.

Litigation still underway over the crashes include a recently reported move by the US family of an 18-year-old victim to sue US-based money transfer companies and two Russian banks that allegedly provided services to the pro-Russian separatists blamed for downing MH17.

The Schansman family is suing Sberbank of Russia, VTB Bank, Western Union Co., Western Union Financial Services, MoneyGram International Inc and MoneyGram payments systems.

The suit says the companies’ provision of material support to the Donetsk’s People’s Republic was “a substantial factor” in its ability to launch a missile from the territory it controlled.

Families of more than 100 MH370 victims were unsuccessful in a US suit to hold Malaysia Airlines, insurer Allianz and Boeing liable for that crash.

A US District Court judge in November 2018 dismissed the litigation, saying the case belonged in Malaysia.

Higher fuel and overcapacity prompts Lufthansa loss

Airbus

European giant Lufthansa Group has reported a first-quarter loss due to higher fuel costs and “substantial industry-wide capacity growth” in Europe.

The loss was bigger than analysts expected but the airline said it expected a decline in unit revenues  to turn around in the second quarter

The increased competition led to lower unit revenues while the results also took a 202m euro hit from higher fuel costs.

READ Food for thought in new Lufthansa lounge.

The airline reported a loss of 336 million euros in adjusted earnings before interest and tax, despite a 3 percent rise in overall revenue to 7.9 billion euros.

“Market-wide overcapacities in Europe also put downward pressure on fares,’’ it said.

“The negative trend was accentuated by the fact that first-quarter results for 2018 had been particularly strong, owing to the capacity reductions deriving from Air Berlin’s demise.”

The network airlines lost 160 million euros in the first quarter, compared to a positive adjusted EBIT of 128m euros in the same quarter a year ago, while Eurowings saw its EBIT loss expand from 212m euros to 257m euros.

Earnings at Lufthansa cargo fell by 67 percent due to downward trends in the air freight market, particularly on routes between Europe and Asia, but earnings were up at Lufthansa Technik and LSG.

“We are seeing good booking levels for the quarter ahead,” Deutsche Lufthansa chief financial officer  Ulrik Svensson said.

“At the same time, we have substantially reduced our own capacity growth. And with a reduction in growth also projected for the European market as a whole, we expect unit revenues to increase again in the second quarter.

“This should be further buoyed by the still-strong demand on our long-haul routes, especially to Asia and North America.”

Overcapacity in Europe has led to the demise of a number of airlines and earlier this month prompted a profit warning from easyJet, which said it expected to report a 275 million pound loss for the half year to March 31.

Speculation Jet Airways will ground fleet

Troubled Indian airline Jet Airways may ground its remaining planes and is now operating just seven aircraft, according to Indian media.

India’s The Economic Times reported that the airline’s management has proposed completely suspending operations while the board looks at expressions of interest from Abu Dhabi’s Etihad, TPG  and Indigo Capital.

It said a cluster of three companies representing founder Naresh Goyal had exited the bidding process.

The newspaper said the airline, which once boasted more than 120 aircraft,  was operating six 70-seater ATR turboprops and a single Boeing 737.

Jet Airways suspended international operations last week and has been grounding planes because it was unable to pay lessors after failing to get an interim loan promised as part of a rescue deal.

The lenders, led by the State Bank of India, were searching for a new investor to take over 75 percent of the airline.

It sent a letter to staff saying that it had extended the cancellation of international operations until Thursday and would update the airline’s board Tuesday.
The airline’s shares slumped as the uncertainty continued and the Bombay Stock Exchange sought clarity over the reports the airline would shut down operations.

All Nippon Airways A380

Self-taught Australian cook and restauranteur Bill Granger has designed a special menu for economy passengers on All Nippon Airways’  (ANA) new Airbus A380 Tokyo-Honolulu services —  and it comes with a free drink in Waikiki.

The Japanese carrier is collaborating with “bills”,  the chain that began with a restaurant in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst after  Granger dropped out of art school in 1993.

The chain went international in 2008, starting in Tokyo and moving on to London, Honolulu and Seoul.

The ANA menu will feature two economy options that will rotate every three months for a year starting May 24. Passengers will receive a special card for a free drink at bills Waikiki as part of the collaboration.

It is part of an all-out effort by ANA to mark the start of Japan’s first A380 service, which begins May 24 with three return services per week and is due to move to 10 a week in July when a second superjumbo arrives.

“ANA has worked with bills to create a healthy, high-quality menu in tune with the demands of modern airline passengers,’’ said executive vice president Hideki Kunugi.

“ It perfectly complements our Japanese-style offerings, which we hope will cater to all tastes and preferences.

“The dishes were designed by bills specifically for ANA, and combine bills’ signature sunny style with ANA’s food technique, and incorporate the flavors of Japanese, Australian and Middle Eastern cuisine.”

ANA says each dish was designed to harness the latest in-flight food preparation technology and create flavors “that resonate even at altitudes even as high as 35,000ft”.

The first meal option initially available from May 24 features a classic Australian-inspired dish of pork schnitzel with mashed potato, green beans, poached egg, and parsley and caper butter as a main.

ICAO accepts 193rd member state

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has grown to 193 member states after Caribbean state Dominica agreed to adhere to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

Dominica’s membership became effective April 13 after it deposited its notification that it would adhere to the Chicago Convention a month earlier.

The move is expected to benefit the tourism industry in the West Indies island country and allow it to tap into global growth in air services and tourism.

ICAO said it was a first step to making aviation in the island compliant with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) and allow it to access the organization’s resources.

“Dominica will now be able to access the global guidance and support ICAO delivers through our No Country Left Behind initiative,’’ ICAO secretary general Fang Liu said.

“It enables our member States to develop aviation policies, strategies, and capacity that are optimized in terms of unlocking the sustainable development benefits of international air connectivity.

“We look forward to welcoming Dominica to events such as the upcoming ICAO World Aviation Forum, which provides States with unique opportunities to connect with the world’s key aviation and finance stakeholders and expand their aviation sector through strategic partnerships.

“A strong foundation for these partnerships will be provided by the ICAO strategic guidance, linked to our safety and security auditing, that Dominica will now be receiving.”

The new entrant will be supported by ICAO’s North American, Central American and Caribbean Regional Office.

The UN-backed organization was formed in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of global aviation.

It sets standards and regulations that include aviation safety, security, efficiency, capacity and environmental protection.

It also audits member states to check their adherence to its standards and safety practices.

Air New Zealand is Australia’s best company for a third year

Air New Zealand boss sees improved business practices

New Zealanders love outdoing Australians and Air New Zealand is crowing after trumping sometimes rival Qantas to become Australia’s no. 1 company for the third consecutive year.

The two companies held the first and second spots on the Reputation Institute’s 2019 Australian Corporate Reputation Index as Qantas moved up to second from the third spot it held in the 2018 index.

They were followed by JB H-Fi, Toyota, Mazda Australia, Aldi Australia, Samsung, Woolworths, Hyundai Australia and Nestle Australia.

Virgin Australia, which came fourth in 2018, dropped out of the top 10 as did Australian Super and Devondale.

READ: American cancels 737 MAX services through to mid-August.

Ironically, Air New Zealand came in second in its home market after being beaten to the top honor by Toyota.

The win will be more ammunition for Air New Zealand boss Christopher Luxon who rarely wastes an opportunity to include a humorous mention of the trans-Tasman rivalry and the dominance of the All Blacks rugby team in his Australian speeches.

Again referencing the rugby rivalry, Luxon said there was “absolutely no denying it was harder to win an away game”.

“For the past three years, Australians have chosen an airline with New Zealand in its name as your most reputable company and we continue to outrank significantly larger Australians businesses and household names,’’ he said as he acknowledged the collective efforts of the airline’s staff.

“Reputational leadership and customer focus go hand-in-hand and it’s only by maintaining an unwavering focus on our customers, investing in our aircraft, our products and our lounges and bringing that genuine Kiwi warmth to our service that we maintain our number one position.

“And not only does Air New Zealand fly more trans-Tasman routes from more Australian cities than any other airline, we also connect thousands of Australians to our North and South American destinations and continue to take a growing slice of the Australian long-haul market.”

Air New Zealand has now opened reservations to its new non-stop service between Auckland and Seoul starting November 23.

The carrier will operate three services per week to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport, increasing to five times a week during the peak holiday period from late December to mid-February.

Seoul is AirNZ’s 32nd international destination and will be flown by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

Air New Zealand chief revenue officer Cam Wallace said there had been a great response to the announcement.
