Hard Landing

If you’re scared of flying perhaps you shouldn’t look at this video. But there again perhaps you should because it shows the incredible strength of the Boeing 767 in extreme weather in the United Kingdom.

The video was shot on the weekend of February 15/16 at Birmingham Airport and shows what appears to be a First Choice 767-300ER with pilots battling very strong crosswinds and related turbulence.

Flying conditions in the UK in recent months have been some of the worst on record with many planes diverted.

The 767 touches down one undercarriage leg and then the other before it bounces up and then slams onto the runway.

Planes are designed and tested for conditions and stresses that they will never encounter in commercial service.

And the tests are severe. For instance after all the testing for two to three lifetimes of wear the wings are bent up to exceed 150 per cent of their design load. It’s a test they must pass.
