An Egyptair A320, registration SU-GCC, with 66 aboard operating flight MS804 has disappeared off radar screens flying at FL370 (37,000ft) over the Mediterranean Sea.
The aircraft was 130nm north of Alexandria the port city of Egypt when its transponder signal ceased at 02:33L according to Aviation Herald.
There were 10 crew and 56 passengers on board
The Guardian has confirmed that there were 30 Egyptians, 15 French, 2 Iraqis, 1 Briton, 1 Belgian, 1 Canadian, 1 Sudanese, 1 Chadian, 1 Portuguese, 1 Algerian, 1 Kuwaiti and 1 Saudi on board.
The A320 is a 180-passenger twin engine jet boasting state of the art technology and with an excellent safety record.
A search has been launched by both Egyptian and Greek authorities.
According to the airline the captain has 6,275 flight hours with 2,101 hours on the A320 while the co-pilot has 2,675 hours.
The A320 was manufactured in 2003.
