Geoffrey I always find your ratings interesting. Just after rating Asiana safe last year they crashed a 777 into a runway in San Francisco!
Interesting how Air New Zealand flew. DC 10 into Mt Erebus in 1974 due to faulty settings, Singapore Airlines crashes a 747 in Taiwan on a closed runway killing many in in 1999 Cathay continues to have safety issues with A 330’s with idling engines, JAL has one of the worst crashes in aviation history in 1985 with. 747 that had been poorly maintained and the pilot of the KLM 747 in Tenerife in led to the worst crash’s in history…….and would you fly on Air France…I would not. All good safe airlines but not on my list.

Air France is not on our list and crashes that happened years ago like you mention above, whilst still awful tragedies, are irrelevant in terms of safety ratings today. What you mention about Cathay's A330s is unbalanced given that every airline around the world, every day, has some maintenance issue - some are just more broadcast than others depending on the brand value to the media and the geographic location. Our ratings are not crystal balls that predict the future but when an airline is scoring a 7/7 for safety you know the best truly measurable measures are being taken to ensure everyone's safety.
