    How can Air New Zealand have a fatality free status when flight 901 crashed into Mt Erebus on South Pole 1979?

    As per our safety rating explanation we use the words fatality free for a 10 year period. You can see a full explanation of our safety rating here https://www.airlineratings.com/safety_rating_criteria.php 10 years allows enough time for maintenance practices to change, airworthiness directives to be executed, pilot retraining and time for a culture shift - all of which most accidents can be attributed to. Some agencies feel 5 years is enough however we choose 10 to allow a greater buffer
