Seeing Chesley Sullenberger’s amazing landing of an aeroplane in the Hudson River got me thinking.
Authorities have mentioned that a screen over the engine to stop the engine ‘inhaling’ birds would not be practicable because of the ice factor due to the high altitude of the aeroplane.
I was wondering if a screen, made of tubular metal piping, could be placed around the entire engine and connected so that the aeroplane’s hot engine oil (or other hot fluid) could be re-routed through the engine’s screen to prevent any ice build-up. This way it would prevent birds from entering the engine without the concern of ice building up on the screen.
I am no engineer…but it’s just a thought that came into my head. Only the professionals would know whether this could work or not.
