Just relating something that happened while we were aboard a Garuda flight in business
    to Jakarta…..
The captain emerged out of the cockpit, spread out on a couple of seats and promptly fell asleep for an hour or so! Who the hell was flying the plane or was it on auto pilot?
    Uhmmmm we were gob smacked!

Depending on the length of the flight the captain and first officer will share command of the plane so one can take a rest break for a couple of hours. During take off and landing both pilots are always present in the cockpit but during flight which is the "safest and easiest" part of the flight autopilot is usually on and a rest break can be taken by one of the pilots. Some aircraft have sleeping quarters where as on others the pilot will have a rest in Business class. So whilst seeing it as a passenger is a little alarming at first, what you saw was perfectly normal and common practice
